Depending on moisture levels and seasonal temperatures, soil pressure can cause basement walls to bow, lean, crack or allow water intrusion. When basement walls become damaged, the structural integrity of a home is compromised.

To repair damaged walls, a system involving basement wall tiebacks is often used.

What Are Basement Wall Tiebacks?

Basement wall tiebacks reinforce damaged basement walls and provide significantly improved structural stability by preventing soil movement against exterior foundation walls.

A reinforced structure provides increased resistance to damage from pressure exerted against it due to surrounding terrain changes, making these types of repairs recommended in order to prevent future problems. A home where this type of repair has been completed is considered safer and more durable than one without reinforcement.

Although carbon-fibre reinforcement is frequently used to improve the strength of basement walls, it does not remove the pressure causing the damage in the first place. Typically used when there is only a small amount of damage, carbon-fibre reinforcement transfers the pressure to the other sections of the wall.

In cases of moderate to severe movement, carbon fibre systems are often accompanied by basement wall tiebacks. The most preferred repair method by foundation experts involves helical tiebacks.

How Are Wall Tiebacks Installed?

The helical tieback system is used to transfer tension loads from the present foundation to a soil suitable for the load. To do so, wall pressure must first be relieved by removing the surrounding soil around the damaged walls. Deeper soil then acts as the foundation for the tiebacks, resisting the pressure and pulling the walls back into alignment. The walls are held in place by helical piling, and the hole is backfilled with gravel.

Because it does not exert as much pressure as soil, the gravel helps prevent the basement walls from future bowing. This type of repair can be installed in any weather and limited access areas. Besides bowing foundation walls, it can also be used to repair retaining walls, sea walls, shoring, temporary wall supports and tilt-up construction.
