Does your weeping tile system have a blockage? High-pressure flushing can help clear soil and debris buildup in drain tile systems made of cement tile, clay tile, Big-O, and PVC. Here's how!

What is High-Pressure Flushing?

A high-pressure water cleaning system, also known as hydro-jetting or weeping tile jetting, is used to successfully clean a piping system without creating any damage to the pipe. To do so, highly pressurized jets of water at approximately 3,000 psi are threaded into the pipe to remove blockages and clean the pipe walls. We can remove everything from accumulated sediment to mineral buildup to other debris during this process without destructing the pipe.

Before the weeping tile flushing service is completed, a foundation expert typically completes a video inspection to see what type of blockage is causing the issue.

Besides being used for unclogging weeping tiles, high-pressure flushing is also commonly used to remove serious clogs in plumbing systems caused by sludge and debris.

The Importance of a Functioning Weeping Tile System

Using an intricate drainage system comprised of porous four-inch pipes, your home's weeping tile system is used to drain water away from your exterior foundation wall effectively. With a clogged weeping tile system, groundwater can accumulate along the foundation wall, building up hydrostatic pressure and leading to foundation issues.

Without proper repair of weeping tile systems, damage ranging from mild to serious can occur. A foul smell and signs of basement dampness are telltale signs that could lead to costly basement floods.

When weeping tile blockages are addressed early, high-pressure flushing can often be completed instead of replacing the entire weeping tile system.

What is Hydrostatic Pressure?

The pressure exerted on foundation walls by water-saturated soil in a home's backfill area is known as hydrostatic pressure. During heavy rainstorms, or a sudden spring thaw, the soil around your home becomes so saturated with water that the water has nowhere else to go but into your basement. It's the force of high pressure that moves water particles through foundation walls and basement floor that causes a wet basement.

Identifying Clogged Weeping Tile Systems

Unseen blockages in the form of roots, clay and soil can build up throughout your weeping tile system but may leave clues such as:

  • Horizontal, vertical or diagonal cracks in your basement or crawlspace walls.

  • Damp areas or pooling water on your basement floor.

  • A strong, musty odour in your finished basement - This could be a sign of mould or mildew behind your drywall.

  • Stained or peeling drywall.

  • Watch out for a dry sump pump pit that normally collects water all year round. If the weeping tile is working properly, the pit should fill with water. If not, you may have a weeping tile system problem.
